MRU Cleaner v1.0.0.5 - Now serving your file-cleaning needs too
posted on Saturday, April 14, 2007 by bobby @ 12:47 pm
This version includes the ability to now clear your Most Recently Used Files list in addition to the already-existing ability to clear your Projects list. I also changed the name from Project MRU Cleaner to just MRU Cleaner. Screenshot below:

And now, I implore you... clean. Clean until you can clean no more.

Thank you so much for writing this great little utility. Perhaps Microsoft should be hiring you. :)

What could make my "Clear Recent Items..." menu item disappear? MRU Cleanup still shows in the Add-In manager but I can't execute it. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall, but it's just no longer under the file menu. Can you help me? I really loved this utility when I could use it.

Hmmm, OR you could just run MRU Blaster in silent mode whenever you wanted.

It's a nice feature, I wanted this OOB (Out of the box). If you agree/disagree vote for it on Microsoft Connect:

https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=277761

I tested your tool using Orcas Beta 1, but did not work. I guess because it uses regkey 9.0 instead of 8.0. Maybe you can offer to give your code to the dev team and see your feature in the next release ;-)

Thanks,

Hey Maarten,

Voted. And I agree - this is a super simple feature to implement - deleting registry keys is about as difficult as this task gets. I'll update the MRU Cleaner to support Orcas and drop that in a few weeks or so.

Cheers,
Bobby

Hi, thanks for the great addin! :)

Please could you make MRUCleaner automatically select those MRU files and projects that are no longer valid to make for easier cleanup? ie, running the addin will check each entry to see if it still exists and then mark it ready for deletion if it doesn't. Then, all the user has to do is hit clear.

Cheers,

Jamie

How do I install this under File menu? I am using Visual Studio Express 2005. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the Express versions don't support 3rd party Add-Ins or Packages.

Hi Bobby,

Well, you are still in the market ;-)

My suggestion (https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=277761) was killed: Status Resolved (Won't Fix)

Same response as three years ago (for Whidbey):
"Thanks for reporting this suggestion. Unfortunately, we will not have time to address this in upcoming release (code name Orcas). However, we will consider this for a future release."

Everybody who voted, thanks and Bobby, I'll be back for your fix ;-)

Sounds good Maarten. Doesn't seem like it'd take much time to implement this functionality as it's pretty basic, but whatevs. I'll try to get an Orca release out soon - should be real easy, I just need to find the time to test it.

Cheers,

Bobby

I'm sure - it's easy. The regkey changed from 8.0 to 9.0. I tested that manually already.

You can mail me if you'd like me to test your app to speed things up ;-)

Yeah, the reg part is no problem - was referring more to the time it takes to get the latest Orcas beta installed and running. I also need to verify none of the interfaces have changed. I've already updated the reg code to pull from the current version of VS so I'll shoot a build over and hopefully it'll work off the bat and save me the Orcas install time.

Sure, you better send me a mail first with your mail address so I can send you my private mail address.

I have Orcas up and running, that would save you the install time ;-)

Hi,
cool add-ins but works only on VS English, my German VS Installation disable your plugin's because of "No such Interface supported"

Hi Bobby,

Awesome tool!

Maybe you should change the menu text from ''Clear Recent Items...'' to ''Clean Recent Items...'' due to the name of add-in.

Thanks,

Easier is to click on the file menu then the recent projects and try to open one that is deleted. it will ask you if you want to delete it click yes and it's gone.

Very nice little utility easier than going to the registry and deleting manually.

Thanks.

Hi,

I would love to use this add-in. I've been editing the registry manually when the MRU project list gets to be a bother.

I'm having a problem with installation:

VS2005 version 8.0.50727.762 (SP.050727-7600)
.NET Framework Version 2.0.50727
Windows Server 2003
Enterprise x64 Edition
Service Pack 2

Here is the error that I get when I start up VS after installing the add-in:

The Add-in 'MRU Cleaner by Yellow Cup' failed to load or caused an exception.
Would you like to remove this Add-in?
If you choose yes, you will need to reinstall the Add-in to use it agian.

Error Message: Class not registered

Error number: 80040154

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

Hmmm, seems like the add-in didn't get installed properly. I'd try uninstalling then reinstalling - maybe starting VS in between. Also, I haven't tested this on 2k3 - only XP & Vista.

Bobby,

Thanks for your response. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, same result. I tried it on 32-bit 2003, same result. It did install OK on my Vista machine, so the problem seems isolated to 2003.

Thanks for your help,
Mike

As you might know they did not fix this bug/issue in VS 2008 as they said they would. I tried to use your tool that you built for 2005 but it does not work for 2008. Can you make one for 2008 as well?
